Scripture is clear… "Sing a New Song to the Lord!" (Psalm 96:1). The Worship Choir and Orchestra lead our church in worship at 10am each Sunday. During the month of February you'll be hearing from a few of these "Lead Worshippers" about why they love being in the choir, and we hope you'll ask yourself if the choir and orchestra could be a great place for you to serve too!
Shandon Baptist Church is home to a large community of believers. As a relative newcomer, I was skeptical about being able to find a “place to belong” in such a large church. My Sunday school class and the choir serve as anchor groups where I now know members and share life with others. I am in the choir because I love to worship my Father God, music draws me closer to Him, and for these 5 reasons: God's Presence, Leadership, Family, Growth & Stewardship.
I feel God’s Spirit so authentically when I sing with the choir. He is so real in the music, and His Spirit moves through the choir loft like a tangible Presence. It makes my heart beat faster as we sing of our Father and how He loves us. As I am drawn closer and closer to Him, I worship Him.
We are blessed at Shandon to have Scott Lee as our Minister of Music & Worship Arts. He is the real deal, the one who always brings us back to the heart of worship. He reminds us that we are called to set the stage at the beginning of worship services for the Spirit of God to permeate the sanctuary and settle into hearts that have been prepared to receive Him. The choir sets the atmosphere for God to be alive in our worship service.

We are family in the choir. It is amazing to see what can happen when people of like minds commit to work together to accomplish God’s purposes. Voices joined together to sing about Jesus, His love and forgiveness or to bring Scripture to life through music. Wow! I thank God that I get to be a part of that twice every week. Even rehearsal is a time of worship, as well as fellowship, for us!
Spiritual growth leads to increased worship. Have you ever read or heard a verse from the Bible and found yourself mentally singing it or hearing it as a tune? We are admonished in Psalm 119:11 to hide God’s Word in our hearts. In the choir, we get to sing powerful songs that gifted men and women have composed with words straight from the Bible. We practice those songs until we can present them from memory. We hide the words in our hearts.
Any time we please God by using our talents for His honor and glory, we are worshiping Him. Tithing is so important to me since everything I have is because of His grace. He has graced each of us with special talents and abilities. He has given me the ability to sing on key! Oh how I love joining my voice with scores of other voices, united in gratefully giving back to God this form of worship as we serve Him.
Are you ready to join the choir? We would love to have you!
