Don't let a child be forgotten at Christmas

main image

JUST IMAGINE...

  1. ...being a grandparent on a fixed income and suddenly you are caring for six children due to a parent being incarcerated.

Many Angel Tree caregivers are so thankful as they would not be able to provide gifts for the children for Christmas.

  2. ...being  on a fixed income without funds to purchase basic necessities.

Last year we had one caregiver just ask for soap for the children in her care.  How sad that the most important item for the children is soap! This year we have several caregivers that are asking for underclothing for the children as the items they need most.

  3. ...looking for extra work just to provide clothing for your grandchildren whose parent(s) are incarcerated.

Previously we had a grandmother, who is  on a fixed income and caring for her grandchild. She  wanted her granddaughter to have clothes for school and church, but had no income to provide additional items for the child.  She asked if she could clean the church or peoples’ houses in exchange for church members buying more clothes for the child.  In this case, our Angel Tree team collectively elected to sponsor that child and purchased a wardrobe for her.

EVERY CHILD HAS A STORY...

For 2.7 million children in the U.S., that story may be filled with the abandonment, loneliness and shame that come from having a mom or dad in prison.  For many, it may also include following their parents down the same destructive road to incarceration.  Angel Tree®, a program of Prison Fellowship, reaches out to the children of prisoners and their families with the love of Christ. (Learn more at  PrisonFellowship.org.)

Shandon Baptist Church is privileged to participate in "Angel Tree Christmas" once again this year.  Through the generous donations from our church members, we can  assist these children with gifts for Christmas and also provide a holiday meal for the family.  This year we have the opportunity to serve 96 families/200 children.

Says Angel Tree Coordinator, Lucille Heydt:

"I can’t tell you how many people each year give us hugs and thank us for the food and gifts.  It is such a heart-rending event where we feel truly blessed to be able to participate in this program and assist these children.   They often will not admit to their peers that their parent is incarcerated as they are ashamed of this.   It just tears your heart when we talk to some of these caregivers and hear their stories and they appreciate any help they receive."

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

SPONSOR AN ANGEL

"Angel" forms with children's names and a brief description of age, gender and gift ideas for a clothing or toy item are available at the Angel Tree Christmas tree in the Gathering Place on Sundays, November 20 through December 4. Select an Angel, purchase the gift and return the wrapped item to the church by December 4.

SPONSOR A HOLIDAY MEAL

Purchase a gift card from a local grocery store, which will be used to provide a holiday meal for the caregivers and children.  Stop by the Angel Tree Christmas tree in the Gathering Place on Sundays, November 20 through December 4 to participate.

Help bring Christmas to Shandon!

You may still have pumpkins out...

but we're already thinking about Christmas!

Over the course of two weekends (and 7 Christmas performances), we'll welcome thousands of people onto our campus to celebrate Christmas. It takes an army of awesome people to make Glorious and The Singing Christmas Tree happen, and we'd love for you to be a part of the team!

No matter your skill set, there is a way for you to serve. We encourage you to consider attending one performance and serving at another! (Middle school students and older are encouraged to serve, as well.)

These guys are already busy building and prepping for "the tree"!

PRE- & POST-EVENT HELP

Believe it or not, "the tree" goes up in under 2 weeks, on Sunday, November 13!  From unloading and constructing the tree, to running cables and setting the stage for Glorious, to transitioning the stage after Glorious and The Singing Christmas Tree, we need a lot of hands on deck!

  • We will be unloading the tree on Saturday, November 12 from noon to about 2pm. Bring gloves!
  • We will build the tree on Sunday, November 13 at 3pm. Please bring gloves and socket wrenches (7/16 & 9/16). Middle school-aged and older, please!
  • Our production team can use extra hands during the day on November 15, 16 and 17 to help run cables and set the stage.
  • If you sew or could help with costuming for The Singing Christmas Tree, we need your skills!
  • We will have a tremendous transition after the 5:00 performance of Glorious on Saturday, December 3. We are looking for 6-8 people that can help reset the stage for Sunday morning services (3-4 hours following the performance).

EVENT HELP

During Glorious and The Singing Christmas Tree, we are looking for greeters (door greeters, parking lot assistants & ushers), production assistance (camera operators, cable runners & gophers--we train!), backstage help (coordinating entrances, exits, and props),  and emergency medical personnel.

The Children's Choir needs adult assistance  during dress rehearsal and performances. Volunteer for 1 or more dates:

  • Thursday, December 8 (Dress Rehearsal): 6-7:30pm
  • Friday, December 9: 6:30pm through end of performance
  • Saturday, December 10 : 2pm through end of 1st performance &/or 5pm through end of 2nd performance
  • Sunday, December 11: 2pm through end of 1st performance &/or 5pm through end of 2nd performance

We are also looking for greeters and production assistance for the Christmas Eve services and the Christmas Day service.
