Make It an "Angel Tree" Christmas

main image

Every child has a story...

For 2.7 million children in the U.S., that story may be filled with the abandonment, loneliness and shame that come from having a mom or dad in prison.  For many, it may also include following their parents down the same destructive road to incarceration.  Angel Tree®, a program of Prison Fellowship, reaches out to the children of prisoners and their families with the love of Christ. -

Shandon Baptist Church is privileged to participate in "Angel Tree Christmas" once again this year.  Through the generous donations from our church members, we have the opportunity to serve families and children at our annual Angel Tree Christmas Party scheduled for Thursday, December 14.

How to get involved

1.  The Main Thing:

  •  Select an Angel - “Angel" forms with children's names and a brief description of age, gender and gift ideas for a clothing or toy item are available at the Angel Tree Christmas tree in the Gathering Place Sunday November 12, November 19 and November 26, if needed.

  • Purchase the gift

  • Bring the wrapped gift to the church by December 3

2.   Provide a meal:  “Angels” will also be available for members to purchase gift cards from BI-LO, a local grocery store, which will be used to provide a holiday meal for the caregivers and children.

3.  Provide a Bible:  ”Bible Angels" will be available for members to purchase a gift card online to allow each caregiver's family to receive a bible and a children's bible dependent upon the age of the children.

4.  Volunteer: Sign up below or in the Gathering Place on Sunday morning.  You can also call Shandon’s telephone number and leave a message on the Angel Tree line, (803) 782-1300, extension 500.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Help with the party

The Angel Tree Party will be on Thursday, December 14 from 6-8pm in the gym. There are many ways to help! Serve food, greet, help children with crafts and games, be a table host or help with gifts!  There are opportunities to donate as little as 15 minutes of your time or as much time as you would like to give.  Every minute is truly appreciated!

  • Help with present pick-up

Some families are unable to attend the party.  They may be able to come by the church to pick up their gifts on Friday, December 15.  Volunteers are needed from 9am-1pm and from 1pm-5pm to hand out gifts to the families.

  • Help with present delivery

Your opportunity to play Santa! For those unable to attend the party or pick up their gifts, we'll deliver them between December 16 and December 23.  Gifts for delivery can be picked up on Friday, December 16 at 5:00 PM.

Sign Up this Sunday at the Angel Tree Kiosk in the Lobby!

Love Houston

It was only a few years ago that torrential rains flooded our streets in Columbia.  We can tell names of friends, family, and neighbors who lost homes and faced true danger.  We lived the #scflood, and we realize how much more devastating and widespread the floods in South Texas have been.  Over the weekend, Hurricane Harvey smothered South Texas.  It has been so bad that the National Weather Service tweeted, “This event is unprecedented & all impacts are unknown & beyond anything  experienced.”

Because of the grace God has given to us, Shandon Baptist Church will respond to this need in the love of God, just like we did here in Columbia a few years ago.  There are 3 ways you can show the love of God with us:

  1. Pray.  Psalm 46 reminds us to “Be still and know that I am God.”  Please pray for God to make his strength and love known in South Texas in the aftermath of this storm.  Pray for those who are displaced, lost, and hurt.  Pray for His church, our brothers and sisters in Christ, to be witnesses of His grace.  Pray for a stronger Houston, stronger because of the loving arms of God.  Pray every day, and ask God how He would use you.
  2. Give.  Our church set up a “Disaster Relief” fund during our own flood.  If you give to this fund, we will forward 100% of your donation Samaritan’s Purse and Send Relief, the disaster relief arm of the North American Mission Board.  You can give here  and choose the “Disaster Relief” option.  You can also give by check or cash this Sunday by writing “Disaster Relief” on your offering envelope.
  3. Go.  We are gathering names and contact information of those who want to go help.  Although we do not have dates and costs currently set, we are building an army of men and women who will be the hands and feet of Jesus in this time of need.  We know how to do mudouts.  We know how to dry photos.  We know how to bring light to darkness.  You can show interest in upcoming trips to South Texas by filling out the form below.

Please consider how God is calling you to respond.  Pray Shandon will be faithful in the way we respond.  We love South Texas, and we want to show it by praying, giving, and going.
