Don't Miss Summer Night of Worship!

Summer Night of Worship: what an exclamation point on a fantastic summer!

When we began what the choir and orchestra have come to call "S.N.O.W." (I think the acronym is a mental relief from the humidity of August in Columbia!) in 2010, it was designed as an end of summer project for the choir and orchestra as well as a night of worship for our church family.  Over the years it has developed into a huge event and we want to make sure that you have it on your calendar!  It will be a variety of music ranging from Inspiration to Southern Gospel to Modern and you don’t want to miss it!

Join us for this year's Summer Night of Worship this coming Sunday night, August 23 at 6:30 in the worship center.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • 200 singers and 50 piece orchestra made up of the choirs from FBC Matthews NC, FBC Simpsonville SC and the Worship Choir and Orchestra from Shandon.
  • Powerful stories of God's amazing grace in the lives of a couple of Shandon folks – Chris Mercer who has been on a journey of healing from a brain tumor and Jason Easter who has been delivered from addiction and is currently the director of Columbia Teen Challenge
  • Ice Cream for the whole family in the gym to follow!
  • This is a free event--no tickets or reservations (except for childcare) needed.

Childcare is available for infants through 4 year olds by reservation. Take care of those reservations online, if you need them.

God is doing a great thing in the Worship Arts Ministry!  You will be blessed, encouraged and will sense God’s presence this Sunday night.

Help us spread the word by inviting friends--send them a link to this post so they'll have all the details.

I look forward to seeing you there!

What's Worship Week?

main image

Worship Week is a huge celebration and reflection of the heartbeat behind the Worship Arts Ministry, and it is absolutely my favorite week of the year!

The kids have fun learning worship skills, how to live worshipful lives and how lead worship on and off stage.  With opportunities to explore instruments, voice, drama and art, this week is an action-packed sample platter of the best Worship Arts opportunities for kids at Shandon!  Mark your calendar for July 13–July 17 and register now to get the early bird discount (through May 15).  You don’t want your students to miss this!

Large Group Rehearsals

These rehearsals point to our Friday evening performance and worship service.  Rising sixth–eighth graders learn to play and sing in a worship band while developing individual and ensemble skills.  They collaborate to put together a worship set that they can share!  Rising first-fifth grade students focus on worshiping with their voice and their body as we learn songs and choreography that will stick with us for years to come!

Exploratory Classes

Have you ever considered taking guitar lessons?  What about voice or piano?  Exploratory classes give our students the opportunity to try their hand at these instruments in a group of beginners.  We provide all of the materials necessary, and students walk away at the end of the week with the ability to play a full song.  Exploratory classes in drama, set design (art), sign language, percussion and dance are also offered.

Can’t decide where to start?

Try “Music Mashup” and build basic musical skills while exploring many instruments!  Elementary students select two exploratory classes for the week, and they attend both classes each day; Middle School students select one.

What will my student learn about worship?

As we discuss how to “learn it, live it and lead it,” we'll learn that

1. worshipers love God with everything they have, and
2. that worshipers make choices that honor God with their talents and their lives.

Elementary students will see these big ideas illustrated in each rehearsal and exploratory class, and our Middle School House Band will explore how to share these ideas in their worship preparation.

Worship Week is for rising 1st – 8th graders.  Register now for your preference of exploratory classes.  Receive a discounted price for registering by May 15.

I look forward to learning it, living it and leading it with your students in July!
