This Weekend: Midlands Food Drive
WISTV recently reported that Harvest Hope Food Banks is facing severe shortages.
Harvest Hope Food Bank is the largest food bank in the state and serves the hungry right here in the Midlands and surrounding counties.
According to the Food Research and Action Center, South Carolina has one of the highest rates of food hardship in the nation. South Carolina ranks 5th in the nation for childhood poverty, with 25% of children living in poverty across the state.
We want to help Harvest Hope Food Bank help our neighbors! Each year Shandon Baptist Church and Northside Baptist Church, together with other community partners and area grocery stores, join forces to raise food and other donations measuring in the tons.
“Every year our clients can be certain that they will have enough food to eat because of this amazing event!” said, Denise Holland, CEO, Harvest Hope Food Bank. “We are, so very, fortunate to have the continued support of WLTX TV, HIS Radio, church volunteers and all of the participating supermarkets in this year’s Food from the Heart event. The donated food we receive every year is always a tremendous resource towards feeding those who quietly suffer from hunger in our communities.”
We intend to make this year's event on Saturday, April 1 the largest one day food drive for Harvest Hope Food Bank in the history of the organization! Shandon Baptist Church will have volunteers stationed at Richland County grocery stores while Northside's volunteers will cover Lexington County stores. Our combined goals are 800 volunteers working to collect and then sort 135,000 pounds of food.
Donations are collected outside the stores and taken to Harvest Hope Food Bank where church volunteers sort the items. They will be distributed to local food pantries and soup kitchens. One hundred percent of all goods collected will benefit men, women and children in the Midlands.
Thank you to our media sponsors WLTX TV, HIS RADIO 92.1 and 94.3 FM The Dude as well as the 48 Richland and Lexington county grocery stores for partnering with us in this fight against hunger in the Midlands!
