Food from the Heart

Next Food from the Heart: Saturday, March 24, 2012
Food from the Heart is Shandon's annual community food drive. In partnership with Northside Baptist Church, WLTX, 89.7 WMHK, Harvest Hope Food Bank, and numerous area grocery stores, we are on mission to put a huge dent in the hunger problem of Richland and Lexington counties.
How you can help out:
- Shop at participating stores on Saturday, March 24 and purchase items to donate to Harvest Hope & area food pantries. (Pick up a list of participating stores in the Gathering Place, or download one here.)
- Sign up to be a volunteer
- Grocery Store Volunteer: Can you smile and be friendly? We need your help with passing out flyers and bags and encouraging shoppers to purchase items to donate. Sign up to be a grocery store volunteer in your Sunday School class.
- Pickup Truck Vounteer: Got a full-size pickup truck? Help transport donations from stores to Harvest Hope.
- Food Sorter: Do you have a “get it done” personality? Help sort and box donations at Harvest Hope from 4-7pm.
To volunteer or for additional information, visit the kiosk in the Gathering Place (available on Sundays in March) or volunteer by completing the form below. There will be a volunteer training event on Sunday, March 18 from 5-5:30pm in the gym. Volunteers, download the Volunteer Information Sheet here.
2011's Food from the Heart (March 26) raised 63.1 tons (yes, TONS!) of food and nonperishable items for Harvest Hope Food Bank. A big thanks to all the volunteers from Shandon and Northside Baptist Church for their time and effort to benefit Harvest Hope Food Bank and bless the Midlands residents.
A Note from Harvest Hope:
"Harvest Hope expresses its deepest appreciation and thanks to everyone who opened their hearts and gave their valuable time or donations during the Food from the Heart food drive. We continue to face an incredible demand stemming from over four years of continuing unemployment, and Harvest Hope will benefit from your compassion and hard work more than ever.
"From 2008 to 2010 Harvest Hope saw a 91% increase in our service to hungry families, and in the last six months has seen a 42% increase in service to families than during the same period last year. It is only through the cooperative efforts of compassion of dedicated partners like Shandon Baptist Church and Northside Baptist Church that we are able to meet the incredible demand and strive to fulfill our mission of feeding hungry families in South Carolina."
