I John was written to Christians struggling against Gnosticism. This religion taught that God was a great unknowable who dwelt in the depths. He could be known only through speculative examination of his “emanations.” This intellectualized religion led to two tragic outcomes: (1) Antinomianism – Since God was so distant, He didn’t really care what you did nor did He pay much attention. This version of Gnosticism let each person set their own moral standard based on their intellectual perception (not much new, huh?). (2) Elite asceticism – Always a danger when human talent is a deciding factor. We don’t know how they recognized superiority, but they sure felt it. John writes to show how to develop true Christian living.
