New Summer Schedule

Posted by Brandon Petersen on

Summer is almost here!  It has already been a very exciting 2017 for Shandon, and we have experienced a wonderful transition with our new pastor, George Wright.  After celebrating one of our largest Easter weekend crowds in the past ten years, we are off to a great start with his sermon series on some key parables of Jesus and how they relate to the powerful mission of our church.

As summer approaches, we would like to share a change  to our Sunday morning schedule for the Worship Services and Sunday School groups.  Starting June 4, Traditional/Blended Service will begin at 9:00 am and Modern Service will begin at 10:30 am.  Our Sunday School groups will start at the same times as well.  If you attend the Traditional/Blended Service at 9:00 am, you would then attend your Sunday School group at 10:30 am.  If you attend the Modern Service at 10:30 am, you would then attend your Sunday School group at 9:00 am.  If you decide to change services altogether and your Sunday School group doesn’t, please contact me at .I would love to help you find a group that is a great fit for you.  We offer wonderful groups where people can find community, fellowship, and bible study during both hours.

There will be a few cool changes in our Shandon Kids Ministry as well during the Summer and leading into the Fall.  For the summer, we will offer an exciting large group session each hour for our K-2nd Graders and 3rd-5th Graders.  All programming for our younger kiddos will remain the same during the 9:00 am and 10:30 am hours.  This change will better promote and encourage our families to worship together during their worship hour of choice.  So, if you normally attend both Sunday School and Worship and have K-5th Graders, you and your kids would go to your respective Sunday School hours and then you are more than welcome, but not required, to bring your kids into worship with you.  The large group hour for our K-5th Graders will be exactly the same during the 9:00 and 10:30 am hours.  Your K-5th Graders are welcome to attend both hours of Sunday School if you would prefer and feel like they are not quite ready for the Worship Service, but they will experience the same lesson twice.

As we move into Fall, your children will continue to have an awesome experience in our Shandon Kids Ministry. The hour of Sunday School for our K-5th Graders will contain both large and small group elements.  If you have questions regarding our Shandon Kids Ministry and how these changes affect your family, please contact Mimi Brookshire at .  She would love to assist you.

As our Sunday School groups were discussing the changes taking place this Summer, someone shared these comments with me from one of our leaders, Tony Kerr.  I would like to pass them along to you because they inspired me:

“When I started coming to Shandon, we were still on Woodrow St.  I was director of singles during the move, and we had to meet in the club house of the apartments next door because the gym wasn't finished.  I remember changing from 2 to 3 hours, adding the Modern Worship service, getting rid of Sunday evening service, and going from 3 services to 2 as we moved to the new sanctuary.  I even taught one class in 4 different rooms and 3 different times all in 12 months.  I started at Shandon as a young single grad student, and now I'm an old married guy with two sons looking at colleges.  Yet through all of that (and much more) God was there.  He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.  And it is God who works in [us] to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.  I know that before we ever considered this change, God knew how He was going to use it to help us do His will - to carry out His mission.  I don't know what change is next, but I will enjoy seeing God work with us through this one.”

Tony nailed it.  God is at work and will continue to work through our great church as we move into the future!  Thank you for being a part and remaining flexible as we navigate through this change in our schedule.  To God be the glory in all we do at Shandon!
